Isohunt

Isohunt is a database of torrents. Torrents are basically representations of data that keep track of how much information of a given file has been downloaded through a client program and how that information is supposed to be assembled. Isohunt has millions of torrents that keep track of terabytes of information. There are similar websites out there that are similar to Isohunt, but Isohunt is by far the largest of these sites on the web. Isohunt configures each torrent in a way that makes the user comfortable and alert when browsing. The user starts by typing in www.isohunt.com in the address bar of their web browser and then typing in the name of a file at the top of the Isohunt window. The filename can be anything whether it is a movie, game, book, song, etc. Isohunt then displays a number of search results containing the user’s keywords in the filenames of their torrents. The user is then free to click on a torrent that he/she likes based on the comment ratings, seeds, and peers. Clicking on a torrent allows you to view file names within the torrent, read other user’s comments about the torrent to know whether there is a problem with it or not, and to download the torrent.

BitTorrent/UTorrent

Once you download a torrent, you must use a client program such as BitTorrent or Utorrent to download the actual file that you want. Utorrent is the exact same thing as BitTorrent but is owned by different people. BitTorrent was the original version of the software and is more stable. Both programs are free and can be downloaded from a number of sources on the Internet. The client program works by keeping track of all the bytes in a file that are stored on other users’ computers. The other users don’t even have to have the same program as you to upload information through the torrent. Within BitTorrent, you’ll notice a label for Seeds and Peers which is similar to Isohunt’s Seeds and Leeches or S and L icons in their search results. Seeds refer to users who have the entire file and are uploading it. Peers or Leeches refer to other users who are also downloading the file and are uploading bits and pieces of the file simultaneously.

P2P Programs

An alternative to Isohunt and BitTorrent is the use of P2P (Peer-to-Peer) programs such as Ares and Limewire. These programs provide a connection to thousands of other users who each store files on their own computer. A P2P program actually works very similar to a client program but instead of exporting the torrents in from other sites, P2P programs generate their own torrents when a user uploads their files. These torrents keep track of the file, how many people have the file, and general maintenance of file structure.
